Orphan Sunday November 7, 2010

Orphan Sunday November 7, 2010
If you don’t know about Orphan Sunday yet, please read on.

Orphan Sunday is an international awareness event birthed out of a church in Zambia. In a church ravaged by poverty and decimated from AIDS, an American visitor named Gary Schneider listened to the plea of a pastor for his congregation to care for the needs of the resulting orphans. Gary watched as people in the church came forward with food and money. Some who had nothing themselves came forward and removed their shoes to give to the orphans.

Gary was so touched by the outpouring of his Zambian brothers and sisters, that with the help of Every Orphan’s Hope started to organize Orphan Sunday events throughout Zambia. In 2003 it spread here to the United States.

This year Orphan Sunday in November 7th, so there is still plenty of time to plan.  If you would like to learn how you and your church take part in Orphan Sunday 2010, please visit www.OrphanSunday.org for more info.

Lake Tahoe Summer Project 2010 Baptisms

Kelly and I had the privilege to staff the 2010 Lake Tahoe Summer Project this year.  I will be posting more about the summer later, but wanted to share with you a video I put together of the 4th of July celebration on the sandy shores of South Lake Tahoe.  Perhaps the highlight of the summer for me was when 22 students took seriously God’s command for us to be baptized and took the plunge in the brisk blue waters of Tahoe.  The Video below shows 21 of the baptisms.  Enjoy!

Photoshop Brushes & Church Marketing Sucks

I am a total Photoshop junkie, and love to create using the digital medium.  I am always looking for some creative new brushes to play with and came across this wonderful directory of Photoshop bush collections.  Take a look at the list at SpeckyBoy.

While on the subject of Photoshop, it brings me to one of my soapbox issues as a believer.  We live in an era where print media, broadcast media and the internet are barraging us with information our every woken hour.  We can’t escape it, from which medicated powder is vital for my foot’s survival, to being sucked into a 3D world of blue aliens, to the lurid temptations of the seemingly anonymous internet, we are surrounded…like it our not.  The younger generations no longer primarily receive information through reading, as has been the case for 1000′s of years.  Now, we can start a debate about how good or bad this is for the world, and more specifically for Christianity I suppose, but in my experience such a debate generally yields little fruit in changing the culture back.  In fact, there is no going back.

Missional Activism

I just read this short post on the Resurgence that seems worthy of everyone reading.  Pastor Tim Gaydos at Mars Hill Downtown writes about our “words backed by deeds of service.”

A little something to chew on.
